What Happens at a Physio Appointment?

Booked in your first physio appointment and wondering what to expect?

If you’ve never been to see a physiotherapist before, it’s normal to have questions about what’s involved. At RHP Physiotherapy, we want you to feel comfortable and confident before your first physiotherapy appointment. Below, we’ve put together a simple guide to what our physiotherapists do and what you can expect during your first visit, and in follow-up appointments.

What does a physiotherapist do?

Physiotherapists are trained allied health professionals who assess, diagnose and treat movement-related issues. Whether it’s recovering from injury, managing or reducing pain, improving mobility or enhancing sports performance, a physio works with you to restore function and keep you moving well.

Physiotherapy treatment may involve manual therapy, joint mobilisation, exercise therapy, and other hands-on techniques that are designed to support recovery and prevent future problems. At RHP, our team takes a whole-person approach, looking at the injury as well as your lifestyle, goals and long-term health.

What happens at the first physio appointment?

Your first appointment is about getting to know you. At RHP Physiotherapy we will:

  • Begin with an initial conversation where we gather your medical history and general health details.
  • Complete a physical examination and initial assessment, which may include movement patterns, posture checks and physical tests.
  • Discuss your concerns and provide as much relevant information as possible about what’s going on, why and how physiotherapy can help.
  • Offer personalised advice and explain your options for appropriate treatment.

After the first session, we will arrange follow-up appointments. These will usually build on the plan developed at your first physiotherapy appointment, progressing your treatment with strategies such as exercise therapy and education to empower you to manage your condition.

Conditions Physiotherapists Can Help With:

At RHP Physiotherapy, we work with people of all ages and activity levels with injuries across the body regions. Common reasons people book with us include lower back and neck pain, joint stiffness, workplace injuries, pre and post surgery rehabilitation, and ongoing conditions such as arthritis.

We can also help with return to sport after injury, posture-related issues, headaches linked to muscle tension and shoulder, knee or hip pain. Whatever your concern, our team will provide the most appropriate treatment and guide you step-by-step through your recovery.

How long is a physio appointment?

  • Initial appointments usually run for up to 60 minutes, giving us time to cover your medical history, complete a physical assessment and start treatment.
  • Standard follow-up sessions are generally 30 minutes, though this can vary depending on your treatment plan.

How much is a physio appointment?

The cost of physiotherapy can vary depending on the length and type of appointment. At RHP Physiotherapy, our fees reflect the expertise and advanced qualifications of our team, as well as the time we spend planning your treatment. If you have private health insurance with extras cover, you may be able to claim a rebate on your sessions. Our reception team can provide current fee details and help you make the most of your health fund benefits.

What to wear to a physio appointment:

Wear something comfortable and easy to move in. Gym clothes, shorts or singlets are often ideal. Depending on the area we’re assessing, you may be asked to expose a joint or different muscles, so clothing that can be adjusted or moved is helpful.

Do you need a referral to see a physio?

No referral is needed to see a physiotherapist. You can book directly with us. However, if your treatment is part of a WorkCover, DVA or EPC, a referral may be required. Our team can guide you through this process if it applies to your situation.

What to expect from a physio appointment & treatment plan:

Physiotherapy is all about helping you achieve long-term health and confidence in your body’s ability. You can expect:

  • A supportive, caring environment.
  • Clear explanations and relevant information about your condition and treatment.
  • A plan that aims to improve movement and relieve pain.
  • A personalised pathway built from your initial appointment onwards, with strategies that grow alongside your progress.
