We find many patients wondering can I get physio on Medicare? The short answer is yes, but only in certain circumstances. If you’re managing a long-term health condition, you may be able to access subsidised physiotherapy through Medicare. What happens when ongoing physio sessions are going to be needed, and out-of-pocket expenses build up? Understanding when is physiotherapy covered by Medicare and when it is not will help you plan your care and avoid unexpected costs. To assist, we’ve put all the essential information together in one place for you.
Medicare offers up to five physiotherapy sessions per calendar year for people with a chronic medical condition. These sessions are provided under what’s called a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, which your GP sets up to coordinate your ongoing healthcare needs.
It’s important to know that Medicare doesn’t cover every physio appointment. The rebate won’t always cover the full cost, which means there may be a gap fee to pay. Many patients also use their private health insurance for appointments outside of the Medicare rebated sessions to reduce out-of-pocket costs or extend the number of sessions each year. Importantly, you can not use Medicare rebates and Private Health care rebates side by side for any single appointment.
To qualify for Medicare physiotherapy, you need to have a chronic condition that has lasted, or is expected to last, at least six months. Examples include arthritis, osteoporosis or long-term musculoskeletal pain.
Accessing these sessions starts with your GP. They’ll prepare a GP Management Plan and Team Care Arrangement, which outlines how different health professionals (like your physiotherapist) will work together to manage your condition. Once you have this referral, you can book your physiotherapy appointments.
Not all physiotherapy clinics accept Medicare referrals, so it’s a good idea to check before you make your first appointment. At RHP, we do accept Medicare referrals, with a gap to be paid in line with the fees of the Physiotherapist. We can help guide you through the process if you’re unsure.
When it comes to billing, physio Medicare rebates are set by the Medicare Benefits Schedule. Clinics often charge more than the rebate for a physiotherapy session. Patients usually pay the difference as a gap fee.
You’re entitled to a maximum of five subsidised sessions each year, and this total is shared across all eligible allied health services. That means if you’re also receiving occupational therapy or seeing another allied health professional under your plan, those sessions will count towards the same cap.
You are only able to access five per calendar year, so it’s worth planning with your GP and physio to make sure you get the most out of your allocation.
Receiving the rebate back into your account might take a day or two, but at RHP we are able to process that rebate immediately. This means less wait time to see your eligible Medicare rebate returned to your account. At RHP Physio we process the full payment before processing your rebate.
Physiotherapy is rarely a quick fix for chronic conditions. Managing long-term issues like arthritis or osteoporosis often requires regular care, with a focus on maintaining mobility, building strength and preventing further complications.
That’s where the GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (CDM plan) is so valuable. It allows your GP, physiotherapist and any other health professionals involved to work together as a team. This coordinated approach ensures that your treatment is consistent, personalised and focused on keeping you as active and healthy as possible.
Medicare physiotherapy benefits aren’t limited to Australian citizens. Some temporary residents, such as New Zealand citizens and people from countries with reciprocal health agreements, as well as Australian Permanent Residents, may also be eligible. If you’re a temporary resident, it’s worth checking your visa conditions and Medicare status before booking, as eligibility can vary.
As a trusted physiotherapy clinic, we work with Medicare referrals. While some other allied health services will also accept Medicare benefits, others may not process them at all. It’s always worth asking about billing practices up front, so you understand what the out-of-pocket cost will be before you begin treatment.
At RHP, our team is experienced in working with patients who hold a valid Medicare card and can explain exactly how rebates and gap fees will apply to your sessions.
Even when you access Medicare benefits, there are usually some out-of-pocket costs involved. The exact amount will depend on the clinic, the location and the type of treatment you receive. Private health insurance can help cover some of these expenses, but it’s always best to check your policy so you know what’s included.
By combining Medicare and private health rebates across the length of their physiotherapy journey, many patients find that physiotherapy becomes more affordable and easier to maintain as part of their ongoing care.
Physiotherapy plays a central role in managing chronic health conditions. Regular sessions can help reduce pain, improve function and support independence. They also help prevent conditions from getting worse, which is particularly important when dealing with long-term issues.
With physiotherapy covered by Medicare, it becomes more accessible to patients who need it most, helping them maintain mobility, strength and overall wellbeing. The benefit of having Medicare cover physiotherapy is that it provides a pathway to sustained care, enabling patients to adhere to their treatment plans and achieve better outcomes in the face of persistent health challenges.
The answer is yes, if you have a chronic medical condition and a referral from your GP. Through a CDM plan for physio, Medicare will subsidise up to five sessions of physiotherapy each year. While rebates don’t usually cover the full cost, private health insurance can help reduce the gap.
