What Is An Exercise Physiologist?

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are university-qualified allied health professionals who specialize in designing and delivering safe, evidence-based exercise interventions for people with chronic medical conditions, injuries, or disability.

Unlike personal trainers, AEPs possess extensive clinical training to understand how the body responds to movement under complex health conditions. At RHP Physiotherapy, our AEP team combines clinical assessment with targeted prescription to help you restore physical function, manage pain, and build sustainable long-term health.

You will be guided through your individualised program in our dedicated space, ensuring you are not only fully supported throughout but your technique and movements are both safe and purposeful.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Physiotherapist and an Exercise Physiologist? +
While both are university-qualified allied health professionals, Physiotherapists primarily focus on acute diagnosis, hands-on treatment, and early-stage injury triage. Exercise Physiologists specialize in active, exercise-based rehabilitation, long-term load management, and clinical conditioning for chronic medical conditions or late-stage injury recovery.
Do I need a doctor's referral to see an Exercise Physiologist? +
No, a doctor's referral is not required if you are attending as a private patient. However, a GP referral is necessary if you wish to claim rebates through Medicare under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM/EPC) plan or access treatment under DVA or WorkCover.
What should I wear and bring to my initial assessment? +
Please wear comfortable, breathable clothing and closed-toe athletic shoes suitable for movement. We also recommend bringing any relevant medical imaging (X-rays, MRIs), doctor referrals, a list of current medications, and a water bottle.
Can Exercise Physiology help if I have a chronic medical condition? +
Yes, absolutely. AEPs are extensively trained to design safe, effective exercise programs tailored for individuals managing conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, chronic fatigue, and neurological conditions.
